Austin Children's Museum
Kids will love the Austin Children's Museum, where they can make their own dinosaur movie, be TV weathercasters, hang under a bridge like an Austin bat or live out their star fantasies performing on 'Austin Kiddie Limits', a re-creation of the well known music TV show 'Austin City Limits'.
Threadgill's World Headquarters
An offshoot of the original roadhouse that attracted Willie Nelson, Threadgill's has tin signs, real Southern cooking and a long, liquor-soaked history. Live music plays in the large beer garden on weekends.
Zilker Park
The enormous Zilker Park has a nature centre, botanical gardens and a sculpture garden. The park is also home to Barton Springs Pool, a locally beloved spring-fed swimming hole with chilly, sparkling clear waters and lots of bathing beauties.
Stubb's BBQ
A huge backyard amphitheater - which underwent a million-dollar makeover in 2007 - regularly attracts big-name concerts (hard rock, blues, roots); lesser star power plays in the downstairs theater-bar.
Blanton Museum of Art
Austin's artiness isn't limited to its rich rock 'n' roll heritage: the city is also home to the country's largest University art collection. The Blanton Museum of Art is famed for its Old Masters (Rembrandt, Dürer and Rubens all make an appearance), and its modern and contemporary American and Latin American works. It also stages regular temporary exhibitions.
Broken Spoke
Sand-covered wooden floors and wagon-wheel chandeliers George Strait used to hang from: Broken Spoke is a true Texas honky-tonk. Go for local acts Cornell Hurd and artist Dale Watson, who play regularly.
Capitol Complex
The 1888 Renaissance revival Texas State Capitol shimmers over Austin from its hilltop location like a pink mirage; views of its imposing dome from vantage points around town are protected by law. While you're in the vicinity, take a stroll through the Capitol grounds or wander through the Greek revival-style 1856 Governor's Mansion.
Salt Lick Barbecue
Take the 32km (20mi) drive south of Austin through beautiful Hill Country to one of the best BBQ places in the state. It's worth the drive just to see the massive open barbecue pits. Expect to wait for some time for food, and bring along your own beer or wine.
Continental Club
Vintage-wearing hipsters, suburban housewives, backpack-toting tourists, day laborers and beret-wearing beatniks come together at the granddaddy of all Austin clubs. Two shows a night include rockabilly, jazz, classic country, indie funk - just about any kinda music, so check the schedule.
East Side Cafe
Expect earthfresh ingredients in the peach-strawberry soup or veggie enchiladas; you can walk through the herb and vegetable garden behind the whitewashed wood house. (And yes, there are meat dishes too.)
